Mumbai: The Paris science and industry museum, ‘Cité des sciences et de l’industrie’ (CSI), along with L’Oréal, have organised a fun-meets-science exhibition, ‘Decoding the Hair’ at the Nehru Science Centre in Mumbai. The exhibition is now open and will continue until February 28, 2009.

‘Decoding the Hair’ is a surprising, fun and instructive exhibition on a theme that is attractive by its familiarity, its universality, and its predominant place in our daily lives. It spans social sciences, life sciences, materials sciences, industry, technology and research.
The exhibition primarily guides visitors through four areas:
* Of life and matter – Here, visitors will have an opportunity to learn about hair - its structure and properties, using a model of hair root.
* The science behind the products – This will put emphasis on research in the industry –shampoos, hair care products, and hair colours, as well as tracing these products from the research stage through to product manufacture.
* The metamorphosis room - The transformation zone is a fun zone, where visitors can try over 40 different hairstyles in a multimedia simulation game, and get several creative ideas for a new look by changing their hairstyle.
* Hair of the world – This section enables visitors to explore different cultures of the world in the context of hair, hair paintings, popular idioms related to hair, and songs from all over the world that are focused on hair.

Speaking at the launch of the exhibition, Dinesh Dayal, COO, L’Oréal, said, “‘Decoding the Hair’ is an invitation to discover and explore a new world - the world of hair, as hidden under an ordinary exterior, lies a rich and fascinating universe.” The exhibition has been localised to suit the tastes of visitors in India, and adapted for Hindi-, Marathi- and English-speaking visitors, as well as for the blind.

At a press conference during her visit to India, Patricia Pineau, Director, Research Communication, L’Oréal Group, said, “With this exhibition, L’Oréal will give its visitors an opportunity to enjoy and educate oneself about the beauty and science of hair. Established as experts in hair care, L’Oréal has a strong commitment to spread awareness about the science and research behind hair care and hair care products.”

Olivier Poublan, Project Manager, CSI, revealed, “The exhibition has been designed to be interactive and will have attractive installations, objects, models, multimedia and computing.”

The exhibition timings are 10 am to 6 pm, and the ticket counter timings are 10 am to 5.30 pm. The exhibition is open to one and all. The admission fee for general visitors is Rs 20, with discounts for groups and students. The Science Centre is open to public every day, including Sundays and public holidays.
